Discover Helsinki

Helsinki’s centre sits on a peninsula, and the sea is part of the street plan. Ferries and island boats share the South Harbour with the Market Square, where stalls sell salmon soup, fried vendace and summer berries. Behind it rises the centre that Carl Ludvig Engel designed in the early nineteenth century: Senate Square, the university and the white cathedral with its green domes, visible from far out in the Gulf of Finland.

Design here is something to use, not only to look at. The Design District spreads through Punavuori and the neighbouring quarters with studios, vintage shops and the Architecture & Design Museum, and Marimekko prints and Iittala glass turn up in ordinary cafés. Newer landmarks continue the habit: the Oodi central library, the underground galleries of Amos Rex, and the curved timber Kamppi Chapel on a shopping square.

Then there is the sauna. Public saunas such as Löyly and Allas Pool stand directly on the waterfront, so a session can end with a dip in Baltic water in any season. In June the nights never fully darken and the city moves outdoors, to Esplanadi park, the islands and the terraces. Winter is dark, snowy and quiet, and Helsinki is good at making it comfortable.

Helsinki highlights

What to see and do

  1. Suomenlinna

A fifteen-minute ferry from the Market Square reaches this sea fortress spread across linked islands, begun in 1748 and listed by UNESCO. Around 800 people still live among the ramparts, tunnels and old cannon; allow half a day.

  2. Senate Square and the cathedral

Engel’s neoclassical square is the formal centre of the city, with Helsinki Cathedral, completed in 1852, at the top of a broad flight of steps. Uspenski Cathedral, red brick with gilded onion domes, stands a short walk to the east.

  3. Löyly and the public saunas

Löyly, a low timber building on the Hernesaari shore, has two wood-heated saunas and a traditional smoke sauna, with steps leading straight into the sea. In the centre, Allas Pool floats its heated and seawater pools beside the Market Square.

  4. Oodi and Temppeliaukio

Two buildings show how Finland builds for the public: Oodi, the central library of 2018, clad in spruce with a reading room under a rolling white ceiling, and Temppeliaukio Church, blasted out of solid rock in 1969 beneath a copper dome.
