Discover Istanbul

Water divides Istanbul into three. The Bosphorus separates Europe from Asia; the Golden Horn cuts the European side into the old imperial peninsula and the hill of Galata. Nearly everything a first visit calls for sits around the point where those waters meet, and the simplest way to understand the city is to stand on the Galata Bridge and turn slowly through a full circle.

On the peninsula, the Byzantine and Ottoman capitals lie on top of each other. Hagia Sophia, completed in 537, faces the Blue Mosque across a garden; the Basilica Cistern lies beneath the street beside them; Topkapı Palace occupies the headland. Uphill, the covered streets of the Grand Bazaar lead towards the Süleymaniye, the mosque the architect Sinan finished in 1557, and its terrace above the Golden Horn.

Across the water, daily life takes over. Galata’s steep lanes climb to İstiklal Caddesi and its old tram; ferries cross to Kadıköy on the Asian shore in about twenty minutes, with tea sold on deck in tulip-shaped glasses. Food follows you everywhere: sesame-crusted simit from street carts, grilled fish sandwiches at Eminönü, and meze tables that fill slowly over a long evening.

What to see and do

  1. Hagia Sophia and Sultanahmet

Nearly fifteen centuries of history under one dome, with the Blue Mosque and its Iznik tiles opposite. Go underground at the Basilica Cistern, where 336 columns stand in shallow water, two of them on carved Medusa heads.

  2. Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar

The Grand Bazaar has grown since the 1450s into some 60 covered streets and about 4,000 shops. Walk downhill from it through the wholesale lanes to the Spice Bazaar at Eminönü for dried fruit, pepper and lokum.

  3. A ferry on the Bosphorus

Public ferries leave Eminönü and Karaköy all day. Cross to Kadıköy for its food market and the seafront at Moda, or take the longer Bosphorus line north past palaces, wooden waterside mansions and under two suspension bridges.

  4. Galata and Beyoğlu

The Genoese built the Galata Tower in 1348; its gallery looks across the Golden Horn to the old city. A short climb further, İstiklal Caddesi runs to Taksim Square past arcades, churches and consulates, with a heritage tram down the middle.
