Discover Florence

Florence is small enough to learn in a day and deep enough to return to for years. The historic centre is little more than two kilometres across, and much of it was paid for by wool and banking between the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries. The cathedral dome, completed by Brunelleschi in 1436, still sets the scale: nothing in the city rises above it.

The south bank of the Arno, the Oltrarno, keeps a slower rhythm. Bookbinders, gilders and shoemakers still work behind open doors around Santo Spirito, and in the evening the neighbourhood gathers on the square in front of one of Brunelleschi’s last churches. From there it is a steady climb to Piazzale Michelangelo and the Romanesque façade of San Miniato al Monte, with the whole city laid out below at sunset.

Eating here is plain and good: bread baked without salt, new olive oil, white beans, a thick T-bone steak grilled over embers, and tripe sandwiches from carts that have fed market workers for generations. Book the main museums ahead in any season, start early, and keep the afternoons for the churches, cloisters and gardens where nobody has to queue.

Florence highlights

What to see and do

  1. The Duomo and Brunelleschi’s dome

Climb the 463 steps between the dome’s two shells to the lantern, passing the Last Judgement fresco at arm’s length. Giotto’s bell tower next door offers the better photograph, because the dome is in it.

  2. The Uffizi

Botticelli’s Birth of Venus and Primavera, Leonardo’s Annunciation and Caravaggio’s Medusa hang in the offices Vasari designed for the Medici administration. Reserve a timed entry and go at opening or in the last two hours of the day.

  3. Oltrarno and San Miniato al Monte

Cross the Ponte Santa Trinita for the best view of the Ponte Vecchio, look into the workshops around Santo Spirito and Borgo San Frediano, then walk up through the rose garden to Piazzale Michelangelo and the church above it.

  4. Mercato Centrale and San Lorenzo

The iron-and-glass market hall of 1874 sells Tuscan produce downstairs and cooked food upstairs. Try a lampredotto sandwich at a counter, then visit the Medici Chapels behind San Lorenzo for Michelangelo’s New Sacristy.
