Discover Clermont-Ferrand

Clermont-Ferrand owes its look to what it is built from. The cathedral, the fountains and much of the old town are cut from Volvic stone, a dark grey lava quarried a little way north of the city, so the Gothic spires stand almost black against the hills. Behind them rises the Puy de Dôme, the tallest of some eighty dormant volcanoes that run from north to south along the western horizon.

The centre is compact and easy on foot. From the sloping lanes around the cathedral it is ten minutes down to Place de Jaude, the wide main square watched over by Bartholdi’s statue of Vercingetorix, and a short tram ride north-east to Montferrand, a separate medieval town until the two were united in 1630. A large student population keeps the terraces around Place de la Victoire busy well into the evening.

Auvergne cooking is mountain cooking: truffade, potatoes fried with fresh tomme until the cheese pulls into strings, and a cheese board that runs from Saint-Nectaire and Cantal to Fourme d’Ambert and Bleu d’Auvergne. The Saint-Pierre market hall is the place to taste them. For nine days around the start of February, an international short film festival fills the city’s cinemas and lecture halls.

Clermont-Ferrand highlights

What to see and do

  1. Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption

Begun in 1248 and finished with its twin spires in the nineteenth century, the cathedral is built throughout of dark Volvic stone. When the Tour de la Bayette is open, its 250 steps lead to a view across the roofs to the volcanoes.

  2. Puy de Dôme

The Panoramique des Dômes rack railway climbs to the 1,465-metre summit in about fifteen minutes. At the top are the remains of a Roman temple of Mercury and a view along the whole Chaîne des Puys, a World Heritage site since 2018.

  3. Basilica of Notre-Dame-du-Port

A twelfth-century Romanesque church in pale sandstone, listed by UNESCO as part of the pilgrim routes to Santiago de Compostela. Look for the carved capitals around the choir and the small Black Madonna in the crypt.

  4. Vulcania and the crater walks

West of the city, Vulcania explains how the volcanoes formed, partly in galleries sunk into the rock. For the real thing, a footpath from the Col des Goules reaches the rim of the Puy Pariou in under an hour and drops into its grassy crater.
