Discover Riga

Riga was a Hanseatic trading port long before it was a capital, and the Old Town on the right bank of the Daugava still shows it: merchants’ houses, guild halls and brick churches packed inside the line of the former walls. Three towers define the skyline, those of the Cathedral, St Peter’s and St James’s, and cobbled lanes run between them to squares set with café tables in summer.

Cross the canal park and the city changes century. Around 1900 Riga was growing fast, and its architects covered whole streets in Art Nouveau: roughly a third of the buildings in the centre belong to the style, with masks, peacocks and long-limbed figures on the façades of Alberta iela and Elizabetes iela. The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site for exactly this mixture.

Daily life gathers at the Central Market, in five former Zeppelin hangars beside the river, where stalls sell smoked fish, pickles, rye bread and forest berries. Order grey peas with bacon, try a small glass of Riga Black Balsam, and if the weather is fine take the train to Jūrmala, where a long pale beach is backed by pine woods and wooden villas.

What to see and do

  1. The view from St Peter’s

A lift climbs to the gallery of St Peter’s Church, 72 metres up, for the view over the Old Town roofs, the Daugava and the port. Below, the ornate House of the Blackheads, rebuilt in the 1990s, faces the Town Hall Square.

  2. Art Nouveau on Alberta iela

Mikhail Eisenstein designed several of the most theatrical façades on this short street. At number 12, the Riga Art Nouveau Centre is a furnished apartment of the period, entered beside a spiral staircase with a richly painted ceiling.

  3. Riga Central Market

Opened in 1930 under the roofs of five hangars built for German airships, the market still gives its halls separate trades, from fish to dairy. Come hungry, and look for smoked sprats, dark rye bread and pickled vegetables.

  4. Jūrmala

Trains from the central station reach Majori in about half an hour. The beach lies a few minutes’ walk beyond Jomas iela, the pedestrian main street: pale sand, shallow water and wooden summer houses standing among the pines.
