Discover Poznań

Poznań’s Old Market Square was rebuilt after 1945, and it wears its colours well: arcaded merchants’ houses in red, green and ochre, Baroque gables, and in the middle a Renaissance town hall with a three-tiered loggia. Every day at noon two mechanical goats emerge above the clock and butt heads twelve times, and the square stops to watch.

A short walk east, across the Warta, lies Ostrów Tumski, the Cathedral Island. Poland’s first rulers had a stronghold here in the tenth century, and Mieszko I and Bolesław the Brave are commemorated in the Golden Chapel of the cathedral. The island is quiet and green, closer in mood to a village than to a city of more than half a million people.

Poznań is also a trade-fair and university town, which keeps it young and well fed. The Jeżyce district has Art Nouveau tenements, a market on Rynek Jeżycki and a dense run of bistros and coffee bars; the former Stary Browar brewery mixes shops with contemporary art. The local speciality is the St Martin’s croissant, filled with white poppy seeds and nuts.

What to see and do

  1. Old Market Square and the goats

Giovanni Battista di Quadro rebuilt the town hall in the 1550s; beside it stands a row of narrow, arcaded merchants’ houses first built in the same century. Be there at noon, when the goats appear above the clock.

  2. Ostrów Tumski

The Archcathedral of St Peter and St Paul stands where Poland’s first bishopric was founded in 968. Across the Cybina, reached by a footbridge, the Porta Posnania centre tells the story of the island with models, film and sound.

  3. St Martin’s croissants

The rogal świętomarciński is a crescent of layered dough filled with white poppy seeds, nuts and dried fruit, protected by an EU designation since 2008. At the Croissant Museum by the Old Market Square you can watch one being made.

  4. Lake Malta

A short tram ride from the centre, this regatta lake has a path of more than five kilometres around its shore, a narrow-gauge park railway running to the zoo, and the Termy Maltańskie thermal pools close by.
