Discover Lanzarote

Lanzarote is the easternmost of the Canary Islands, about 125 kilometres off the African coast, and about a quarter of its surface is less than three hundred years old. Between 1730 and 1736 a chain of eruptions buried villages and farmland under lava and ash. What remains is a landscape of cones, craters and fields of black cinder in shades of rust, ochre and charcoal, with very little rain and hardly a tree.

What people have built here is just as distinctive. The artist and architect César Manrique, born in Arrecife in 1919, persuaded the island to keep its houses low and whitewashed and its roadsides free of billboards. He also turned lava tunnels, a quarry and a cliff top into the sights the island is now known for. Since 1993 the whole of Lanzarote has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

The beaches lie mostly in the south and east: the long resort sands of Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise, and the undeveloped coves of Papagayo near Playa Blanca. On the north-west coast, Famara is a wide surf beach beneath high cliffs. Inland, order papas arrugadas with mojo, grilled fish and a glass of Malvasía Volcánica from the vineyards of La Geria.

Lanzarote highlights

What to see and do

  1. Timanfaya National Park

The Montañas del Fuego are the heart of the 1730s eruptions. A coach road threads the craters and lava fields, and at Islote de Hilario the ground is still hot enough to set dry brush alight and to grill meat at the El Diablo restaurant.

  2. In the footsteps of César Manrique

Start at his former home in Tahíche, built over five volcanic bubbles. Then see Jameos del Agua, a lava tunnel with an underground lake, the Jardín de Cactus at Guatiza and the Mirador del Río, a lookout set into the cliff high above La Graciosa.

  3. La Geria wine country

Each vine grows in its own hollow dug into black volcanic ash, ringed by a low crescent of lava stone. The pattern covers whole hillsides. Bodegas along the LZ-30 road pour Malvasía Volcánica; El Grifo, founded in 1775, also has a small wine museum.

  4. Papagayo beaches

A string of sheltered coves with pale sand and clear water in the protected hills of Los Ajaches, east of Playa Blanca. Reach them by dirt track or on foot along the coast, and bring water and shade: there is little of either.
